Homeless Youth Programs
Of the approx. 10,000 homeless youth trying to survive on the streets of Los Angeles, a staggering 40% are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). The problem is dire: homeless LGBT youth are more likely than other youth to be robbed (29% vs. 21%), physically assaulted (28% vs. 18%), and sexually assaulted or raped (22% vs. 7%).
The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Youth Center on Highland is serving record numbers of homeless youth, offering them 3 meals/day, 20 emergency overnight beds, clean clothes, counseling, a GED preparation program, job placement services and the help they need to get off the street. The Center also operates a 24-bed transitional living program where formerly homeless LGBT youth can stay for up 18 months while staff help them develop the skills, confidence and resources to make it on their own.
LifeWorks Youth Mentoring & Project SPIN
LGBTQ youth are 4 times more at risk of attempting suicide than their heterosexual classmates. Six out of 10 LGBT students reported feeling unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and just as many report feeling isolated from their peers and any supportive adults. More than 80% report being verbally harassed and 38% have been physically harassed.
The Center is working to make the entire LA Unified School District a welcoming place for LGBTQ youth and supports them with mentoring, counseling and scholarships.
The Center’s Project SPIN works with 1,200 schools in the L.A. Unified School District to change the culture and environment in the classrooms and at home so that LGBT youth won’t even think about suicide.
LifeWorks is the Center’s incredible program that matches LGBT youth with specially trained adult mentors who help them reach their full potential. The program also offers free events and activities to help LGBT youth build a positive support network with peers. LifeWorks’ YouthSpace provides at least one place in the world where LGBT kids feel safe and celebrated.
For more than 40 years, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center has been building the health, advocating for the rights and enriching the lives of LGBT people. I hope you’ll join me in supporting them!
