The Educational Program

The Collins library teaches information literacy (access, evaluation, and use) starting in the sixth grade. All students are registered for a local public library card, which enhances their access to interlibrary loan materials and academic databases.

New students attend library orientation classes at the beginning of each year to learn basic research and organizational strategies including: how to access Dunn's automated book catalog, search academic databases, and order books via interlibrary loan from public and university library systems. The library curriculum also covers issues of plagiarism, proper citation, searching academic databases versus using the Internet, and evaluating print and web sources. These study skills are reinforced throughout the year as students visit the library for class projects and individual support.
