Learning Strategies Accommodations at Dunn
Dunn School makes accommodations for students with disabilities when it is appropriate. The Director of Learning Strategies (LS), the Learning Strategies faculty, and the Director of the Upper School determine the appropriateness of accommodations made. It is our goal to ensure that LS students receive a genuine college preparatory education, and to that end we do not make any accommodations that alter the content of course material. Students in Learning Strategies are required to take all of the college preparatory courses that non-LS students take.
Accommodations that we routinely make include extended time on tests and major quizzes and the use of technology including, but not limited to, word processors, spell checkers, calculators, and audio books. In addition, all Dunn faculty are aware of which students are LS students and are required to accommodate specific needs of these students in the classroom and in their teaching methods.
Accommodations that we do not routinely make include altering the amount or content of subject material that LS students need to learn, altering the length of written assignments, changing testing formats, and waiving course requirements.
LS teachers help to develop highly individualized learning and test taking strategies with each LS student, recording and naming these, and reviewing and using these as and when necessary. To this effect, each LS student has his/her own binder, which over the four years accumulates learning strategies, problem solving techniques, student achievements and successe. Students are able to take their LS binder with them to college in the hope that it will continue to serve as a learning tool in the future.
