Future Rainier Vista Habitat homeowner Treaous Florence-Moreland (pictured left with her family and Deacon Jones) shares her story: "The traditional way of purchasing a home wasn’t for me. Going from home to home to see what I could afford, and seeing if the neighborhood was safe enough for my family, was discouraging. It took a lot out of me, and my kids. Being a single parent means spending my money wisely. I always knew that one day I wanted to be in a home I could call my own. With three growing boys and tackling my long commute each day, my time with them is very important. I am their Superman, Spiderman, and Batman all in one, their Superwoman. They depend on me to be there for them. Habitat has made my dream come true. My youngest son said, 'When I grow up, I’m going to buy a Habitat house. They come from dreaming.' I partnered with Habitat for Humanity in 2009 after attending an orientation. The HfH dedication, religious principles and mission statement had me sold. Owning a home through an organization that is completely dedicated to helping families means more one on one time with my boys, sitting in the backyard at night counting the stars, or starting our own family traditions. Thank you, Habitat for Humanity!"

 Volunteer Highlight

Kip Korper has been volunteering with Habitat for eight years now. He started out working at the Tacoma Habitat and switched over to EKC about five years ago. He has lived in the Puget Sound area for 22 years after moving from Northern California.

What skills has Kip gained from volunteering? Kip said, "It's hard to list the many construction skills I've learned with Habitat. I'm also getting better at long range Gatorade throws. One noteworthy skill is stair building. With nothing more than Mike's famous quizzical look (it took three or four), I learned to avoid assembiling stairs upside down."

What aspects of volunteering with Habitat have you enjoyed most? "Learning new skills has been fun. Feeling like I've contributed and getting personal thanks from the home owners makes my day. Probably, one of the most enjoyable aspect has been working with the AmeriCorps volunteers," said Kip.

What about Habitat's mission is attractive to you? Kip said, "The fact many people from different walks of life come together to build affordable housing for families in need. I took a friend from the former Soviet Union to work on a habitat site and he commented, "You Americans are very giving."

These are just a couple of the many hardworking families and volunteers that you will be helping by participating in the Habitat Build-a-Thon.  It only takes a little bit of your time to change these families’ lives forever.
