Mirna will become a Habitat homeowner in Magnolia Village in the Issaquah Highlands in 2010.  This is the next step of a long journey that began for Mirna in Mexico and will continue in Issaquah in her own home.  Mirna and her three children, Alonzo, 12, Eduardo, 5, and Aryana, 3 currently live in a dangerous area where they are constantly on alert for car thefts, drug dealers and strangers at their door.  In addition, they live in a flood zone and in four years, their apartment has been flooded three times causing the children to be afraid every time it rains.  As the sole wage earner in the family, Mirna works hard but “she always tries to balance work with her family’s quality time.”  Her ultimate dream is to have all of her children attend college.  Owning a Habitat home for the family is an important step in achieving the stability and peace of mind they need as they work together to fulfill Mirna’s dream.

Bryan has been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity for over a year and half on a regular basis, but first volunteered over 20 years ago. Though he has worked in the technology industry for many years, he began his working life as a carpenter and have always enjoyed building things.  Bryan volunteers for the same reasons as others do. He has many blessings in life and wants the same for others who are less fortunate. He enjoys the camaraderie among volunteers and staff as they work together to complete the projects. Bryan relishes in the satisfaction of using the skills he has acquired and seeing a tangible result from each day’s work and he strongly believes in the Habitat model that requires commitment from the homeowners. The Habitat for Humanity model allows future homeowners to earn the benefits they receive, rewarding their effort not just recognizing their need of decent affordable housing. Now that Bryan’s sons are grown and are occasionally able to join him, he hopes to pass along the rewards of volunteering to them.

These are just a couple of the many hardworking families and volunteers that you will be helping by participating in the Habitat Build-a-Thon.  It only takes a little bit of your time to change these families’ lives forever.
